	PROLOGUE: THE TUNING &#38;nbsp;

The CHORUS is huddled around a small radio. They are tuning it, trying to reach a radio station. For a long few beats, they are met with only static. 

CHORUS A: Keep trying. 
[...]

CHORUS B holds the radio up high in the air. Nothing. Just static. 

[...]

Suddenly, the radio tunes in to a song. The CHORUS freeze, listening. It is haunting. 


CHORUS C: (whispering) Nobody move. 


The CHORUS is a tableau of frozen statues. A long pause. Then, they take a deep breath and begin to speak as one. 


CHORUS: Now, the story can begin. / Hear this: you proud, you wounded, you short of breath, you blinded by tears, you with a foot upon your back. / We do not wish to tell the story of an African tragedy* / Nor a tale of suffering / of sealed fate / of pain that ceases to ache. / yes, there are dark clouds to move through / there is wind and rain ahead / but do not look away, for – see, there / in the distance / a stitching together / a mending of things torn / and hope, uncoiling and blooming as aloes do. / Let the memories come now / Let them come flooding back 


The lights fade to black. The music continues softly into the next scene.

Before dawn. It is dark. A candle is lit. SILUMKO kneels beside it, whispering. He might be praying. 


MAMA (off): Silumko! 


SILUMKO does not move but goes on whispering. Several beats. 


MAMA (off): Silumko! Sebefikile! [They are here!] 


SILUMKO, still unmoving, falls silent. For a few beats, it is just his breathing we hear. A car hoots. 


MAMA (off): Silumko! They will leave without you. 

He stays still. One more hoot. We hear the car engine roar as it peels off the dirt road. Silumko springs into action. Snatching up his bag, he races out and after the car. 


SILUMKO: Bhabhayi, Mama! Bhabhayi, mntasekhaya! Ndiyakuthanda! [Goodbye, Mama! Goodbye, sisters! I love you!] 


He runs after the bakkie, which is a few meters ahead of him. 


SILUMKO: Hey! Hey man, subalekisa! Hey, yima! [slow down! Hey, wait!] 


He is sprinting now. The CHORUS is up high, as if on the back of the bakkie. Four arms reach out to SILUMKO. 


PASSENGERS: Umqhubi akamisi! Khawuleza fondini! Khwela! [Driver won’t stop! Come on, man! Jump!] 


SILUMKO is breathing hard, running hard. He looks back at the house one more time, then leaps up into the air. The four arms catch him and haul him up onto the back of the bakkie. He sits back, spent, and watches his house recede into the distance.

Now this is my idea of a church. &#38;nbsp;/ Tread slowly now &#38;nbsp;/ time moves much more slowly out here in the Eastern Cape, there's no need to rush. &#38;nbsp;/ We're going backwards in time &#38;nbsp;/ to a small house on the outskirts of Alice &#38;nbsp;/ a little old town named after the Queen of England’s daughter &#38;nbsp;/We haven’t gotten around to changing the name yet &#38;nbsp;/But here is the house of our young Silumko, his mother, his uncle and his two sisters &#38;nbsp;/ still haunted by the presence of their recently departed father &#38;nbsp;/ whose body arrived in a box from Johannesburg only weeks before &#38;nbsp;/ along with a yellow envelope containing a sheath of papers with words like Accident &#38;nbsp;/ Eligible &#38;nbsp;/Compensation.

Evening. SILUMKO sits at the kitchen table. On the table, the yellow envelope. He frowns at a piece of paper, then slides it back into the envelope. 


A tupperware slides across the table towards him. He catches it before it slides off the table. 


SILUMKO: Andizokwazi mama uyithatha! [I'm not taking that, mama.] (to the audience) She's trying to give me a tupperware! 


MAMA: Yes, you are taking it. What are you going to eat on the way? Do you know how long this trip is? 


SILU, Yes, mama, I know. 


MAMA: You know? The furthest you've ever been is to East London. KuseRhawtini ke apha. [This is Johannesburg.] 


SISTERS: Ja, this is Johannesburg! 

MAMA: Mantombazana khanithule! [Girls, quiet!] But they are right. This is Johannesburg. The other side of the country. Thatha la Tupperware. [Take the tupperware.]

SCENE 4: GOODBYE, ALICE REDUX 


Scene 1 happens again, sped up. Lights drop to black. A candle is lit. SILUMKO kneels. 


MAMA: Silumko! 


Car horn blares and the car peels off. SILUMKO runs and jumps up, lifted by the chorus, onto the back of the bakkie. He sits back, catching his breath. 


CHORUS B: Uyazazi apho uya khona? [You know where you are going?] 


SILUMKO: eRhawtini. [Johannesburg]. 


CHORUS B: Yes man, but the address, what address are you going to? 


SILUMKO: Oh. 


SILUMKO takes a slip of paper out of his pocket and hands it to the CHORUS. 


CHORUS A: Lie back, we have a long drive ahead of us. 


SILUMKO: At least there’s a mattress.&#38;nbsp;


The CHORUS slides a mattress under SILUMKO. He lies back on it. 


CHORUS: His father must have known this road well. He did this journey twice, sometimes three times a year, coming home from Joburg for a visit / Bringing plastics: clothes, batteries, a cellphone / Then, after a while, back to the city to work. 


CHORUS C: Then, for the last time, his father did this journey in reverse. 


CHORUS B: Meaning? 


CHORUS C: Not his father. His father’s body. Transported all the way from Charlotte Maxeke hospital in Joburg to rest with the ancestors at home. 


SILUMKO: (half dreaming): My father arrived in a box at sunrise. At sunrise, my father arrived in a box. A sunrise arrived in my father with a box. A box arrived with my father in a sunrise. (beat) Let me try that again. My father’s body arrived in a box at sunrise. My father’s body arrived in a box in a Toyota Quantum with airconditioning and four body compartments at sunrise. 


SILUMKO lies back on the mattress and falls asleep.

SILUMKO: Makazi? [Auntie?] 


AUNTIE: Did you bring my water? 


SILUMKO: Ewe, Makazi. [Yes, Auntie] 


AUNTIE: 2 litre? 


SILUMKO: Ewe, Makazi. [Yes, Auntie] 


SILUMKO unzips his togbag and takes out the 2 litre bottle of sea water. AUNTIE takes it and inspects it. 


AUNTIE: From which beach is it? 


SILUMKO: Hamburg, Makazi. 

[...]

AUNTIE: Tomorrow you must go with your cousin to the site. Ask there for a job. He's a good boy, Kholo. He will show you how things are there. 
[...]

Kholo, yizobulisa UMzala wakho! [Kholo, come and greet your cousin!] 


KHOLO enters. He and SILUMKO embrace awkwardly. 


AUNTIE: Take care of him, Kholo. No funny things. 


AUNTIE exits. KHOLO checks to see that his mother has left the room. 


KHOLO: Beer? 

SILUMKO: Thanks.

KHOLO: You're coming with me to work tomorrow? 


SILUMKO: Yes. 


KHOLO: You scared of hard work? 


SILUMKO: No. I know what hard work is. I just need to understand and know what to do. 

KHOLO: Ja, well. You will understand. It is not hard to learn. (he gets up to leave). You must shave. We are leaving here at 6.30. And you must be ready. I'm not waking you up.

SILUMKO: What is this place? 


VALERIA: Ugh. LUSH, ok, let me tell you about Lush… if you are someone who can’t handle strong smells, it is hell on earth – 


SILUMKO: It’s very strong – 


VALERIA: Strong is an understatement, try potent, it’s like Satan’s deodorant. (spotting her manager) Quick, act like you’re a customer. Ja, so of the bath bombs I love the Marshmellow World and the Oaty Creamy Dreamy, but if you’re in the market for something more earthy I recommend the Karma shower bomb with turmeric – 


SILUMKO: He’s gone. 


VALERIA: UGH, I’m so sick of this fucking mall, this mother ship of Capitalism – 


SILUMKO: I like it. it’s quiet. Compared to outside. It’s very clean…You can just walk around without anyone bothering you... and you don’t have to shop. And it’s… glamorous.&#38;nbsp;
